arXiv preprint LaTeX template (arxiv.sty style)

arXiv accepts any layout; a popular preprint look is the community arxiv.sty style from github.com/kourgeorge/arxiv-style. Scissor LaTeX has a free look-alike for drafting in your browser, with no account: start from the arXiv preprint template, or add \usepackage{arxiv} to an article. The same .tex compiles with the original style file.

The template

The arXiv preprint template is a short mathematical-physics paper with three authors, a theorem with proof, a pgfplots figure, a booktabs table and author-year references. Open the arXiv preprint template in the editor to see all of it; the example further down shows its title block.

Turning it on

The style is a package on top of article:

LaTeX
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{arxiv}

When Scissor LaTeX finds this line, it uses the preprint look: Times-like text (TeX Gyre Termes, downloaded on first use), a title between two rules, "A Preprint" under it, bold centred authors, and a running head on the following pages. The Problems tab shows a note that the look-alike layout is active and where to get arxiv.sty to compile elsewhere.

\title{Decay Rates of a Damped Chain of 44 Oscillators}
\author{Erika Mustermann \\ Department of Mathematics \\ Example University \\
  \texttt{erika@example.org}
  \And
  John Doe \\ Institute of Example Studies \\ Exampleton \\
  \texttt{john.doe@example.org}}
\date{}
\renewcommand{\shorttitle}{Decay rates of a damped chain}

\begin{document}
\maketitle

\begin{abstract}
We bound the spectral gap of a chain of coupled oscillators that is damped at one end,
and compare the bound with numerical runs.
\end{abstract}

\keywords{spectral gap \and damping \and lattice dynamics}

\section{Introduction}
When only the boundary of a chain is damped, energy must travel through the chain before
it is lost, so the decay rate $\gamma$ depends on the length $N$.

Commands of the style

CommandWhat it doesIn Scissor LaTeX
\And, \ANDseparate authors (side by side, or a new row)Works
\keywords{a \and b}a keyword line after the abstractWorks
\renewcommand{\shorttitle}{..}the running headWorks
\renewcommand{\headeright}{..}the text "A Preprint" in the headerWorks
\renewcommand{\undertitle}{..}the text "A Preprint" under the titleWorks
\thanks{..}a footnote on a nameWorks

The label and the running head are plain macros. This document changes both; the first page has no header, the second shows the short title and the label.

A technical report label and the running head

Problems tab: Layout in the style of the arXiv preprint style (final mode). Not official. To compile elsewhere, add arxiv.sty from github.com/kourgeorge/arxiv-style.

The style has no review or anonymous mode. The template loads natbib, and its bibliography uses unsrtnat, which Scissor LaTeX sets as author-year citations with the entries in citation order.

What differs from arxiv.sty

To submit, get arxiv.sty from github.com/kourgeorge/arxiv-style and put it next to your .tex file; the same file then compiles unchanged. See conference look-alike templates for the other layouts.

Questions and answers

Does arXiv require a specific template?

No. arXiv accepts papers in any layout. The arxiv.sty style is a popular community choice that makes a preprint look tidy.

How do I change "A Preprint" to "Technical Report"?

Add \renewcommand{\headeright}{Technical Report} and \renewcommand{\undertitle}{Technical Report} to the preamble.
