Differences from a TeX installation
Scissor LaTeX does not run TeX: it converts your LaTeX into another typesetting language in the browser and typesets that, so documents appear instantly and never stop at a single error, but layout comes from the class, packages are look-alikes rather than real code, and some commands are ignored.
How a document becomes pages
A TeX installation runs the TeX program on your source. TeX reads the class and package files, which are themselves programs, and every command you write is executed by them.
Scissor LaTeX works differently. Everything happens in your browser, in two steps:
- Conversion. Your LaTeX is read by a converter that knows the common commands, environments and packages, and is rewritten in Typst, a modern typesetting language.
- Typesetting. The Typst text is laid out into pages with the fonts that ship with the editor. Math is read by a separate math converter, and TikZ and pgfplots pictures are drawn by Scissor LaTeX's own renderer.
No .cls or .sty file is ever run. A package is "supported" when the converter knows what its commands mean, not because its code was loaded. Most differences on this page follow from that.
Errors and messages
| In a TeX installation | In Scissor LaTeX |
|---|---|
| The first error stops the run. | The document is typeset anyway; problems go to the Problems tab. |
| "Undefined control sequence" | The command is skipped and its braced text kept; the Problems tab lists the name. |
| An unknown environment is an error. | The environment is removed without a message; its content stays. |
| A bad formula is an error with a line number. | The formula is shown as red source; the Problems tab names it with its line. |
| "Reference undefined" warning | A bold ??; the Problems tab lists the missing labels. |
| A missing package stops the run. | \usepackage never fails; an unknown package is noted in the Problems tab. |
EPS images stop the whole document; see When the whole document does not typeset and Troubleshooting. Every message is explained in Common errors.
An unknown command and an unknown environment
The total is \fancytotal{44} kilograms.

Classes and page layout
| Feature | In Scissor LaTeX |
|---|---|
| Classes | article, report and book layouts. Other classes map to one of them, or to a conference or journal look-alike such as IEEEtran, acmart, llncs, revtex4-2 or elsarticle. beamer makes no slides and letter commands are not read. |
| Class options | Paper size (a4paper, letterpaper and four more), landscape, 10pt/11pt/12pt and twocolumn work. twoside, titlepage, fleqn, leqno and others are ignored. |
| Margins and paper | From the class and the paper size, or from geometry in the preamble: any paper size, landscape and the margins. \newgeometry is ignored. |
| Headers and footers | The page number only. fancyhdr is ignored; \pagestyle{empty} in the preamble removes the number. |
| Spacing | \vspace, \hspace, \hfill, line spacing (setspace), \parindent and \parskip are ignored. |
| Floats | In ordinary classes a figure or table stays where you write it; [h], [t], [b] change nothing. Conference layouts move floats to the top or bottom. |
See Page layout, Document classes, Paragraphs and spacing and Floats.
Text and fonts
| Feature | In Scissor LaTeX |
|---|---|
| Body font | Latin Modern, or a sans serif face for a sans serif document (TeX Gyre Heros with helvet); the conference templates use their own fonts. fontspec, fontenc, inputenc and font packages are accepted and ignored. |
| Size switches | \small, \large, \Huge and the others work, and \fontsize{..}{..}\selectfont gives the nearest of the common sizes from 5 to 144 pt. The conference and journal layouts keep their own sizes. |
| Boxes | \fbox{...} keeps the text but draws no frame; \mbox and \hbox keep the text. |
| Colour in text | \textcolor and \color keep the text but not the colour; colour works in formulas and drawings. |
| Languages | Every script is shaped, including Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Devanagari. Hyphenation is English for every language, babel's translated names ("Inhaltsverzeichnis") are not used, and right-to-left paragraphs stay left to right. |
| Input encoding | Always UTF-8. You can type any character directly. |
\today | Prints nothing. Write the date. |
Size switches work, text colour is ignored
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{xcolor}
\begin{document}
{\large This sentence is large,} and
\textcolor{red}{this one asked to be red}. In a formula the
colour works: $\textcolor{red}{x} + 44$.
\end{document}See Text formatting, Colours and Languages and fonts.
Math
Math is read by its own converter, which knows about a thousand commands from LaTeX, amsmath, amssymb and mathtools. The differences:
- A command it does not know turns that formula red. Define it with
\newcommandand it works, because your macros are expanded first. - A formula never stops the whole document.
\partial,\langle,\oplus,\hbarandVmatrix, which did in earlier versions, work; see When the whole document does not typeset. \sidesetshows a red formula, and after\intertextthe columns of the next rows are aligned on their own.
See Math basics, Equations and alignment and the Symbols reference.
Figures, tables and drawings
| Feature | In Scissor LaTeX |
|---|---|
\includegraphics | Only width= is applied. PNG, JPEG, SVG and PDF work; without an extension only .png, .jpg, .jpeg and .svg are found. EPS stops the document. \graphicspath is ignored. |
| Subfigures | Each subfigure becomes a figure of its own. |
| Wrapped and rotated floats | wrapfigure becomes a normal figure, and nothing is rotated. |
| Tables | Column widths (p{3cm}, tabularx) are not applied, \multirow does not merge rows, \cline and \cmidrule are left out, cell colours are dropped. \hline and the booktabs rules work. |
| TikZ and pgfplots | Drawn natively, for a large subset; unsupported options are skipped with a message. tikzcd, circuitikz, forest and picture are left out. |
See Figures and images, Tables, pgfplots basics and Drawings with TikZ.
References, citations and links
| Feature | In Scissor LaTeX |
|---|---|
\ref, \eqref, \pageref, \cref | Work. \autoref prints only the number for equations, and \nameref prints the number instead of the title. |
| BibTeX and biblatex | Both read .bib files; every .bib file in the project is used. Styles come from a fixed list of look-alikes; .bst and .bbx files are not run, and unknown style names such as alpha give numbered IEEE-like references, with a note in the Problems tab. A .bib entry that cannot be read is skipped and named; the others are kept. |
thebibliography | Printed, but its entries cannot be cited. |
hyperref | \href and \url make links. Links are not coloured or boxed, and \hypersetup is ignored outside the conference layouts. |
| Footnotes | \footnote works; \footnotemark prints nothing, and \thanks is left out in the standard classes. |
See Labels and cross-references, Bibliographies, Links and Footnotes.
Your own commands and files
| Feature | In Scissor LaTeX |
|---|---|
\newcommand, \renewcommand, \newenvironment, \DeclareMathOperator | Work, with an optional first argument. |
\def | Works for simple macros; delimited parameters are not matched. |
\NewDocumentCommand (xparse) | Not read. |
Internal @ commands, \makeatletter code | Not run, so code copied from a .sty file may not work. |
\input, \include | Work; \includeonly is ignored. Page breaks in a row (\include, \clearpage, \newpage) make one break, never an empty page. |
\subfile, \import, \lstinputlisting, \inputminted | Skipped with a message. |
| Code listings | lstlisting and minted are coloured for the language; line numbers, frames, captions and \lstset are not applied. |
See Your own commands, Projects with several files, Code listings and Algorithms.
What works here but not in a TeX installation
Scissor LaTeX is lenient, so a document can work here and fail elsewhere. These are the usual cases:
- Theorem environments such as
theorem, lemmaanddefinitionwork without\newtheorem. - Unicode math characters such as ∂ and ⟨ work in formulas without
unicode-math. - Unknown commands, unclosed environments, a lone
&andx_1outside math do not stop anything. - Conference layouts work without the conference's
.styor.clsfile in the project.
If the document must also compile in a TeX installation, declare what you use and check it there before you submit. The checklist is in Troubleshooting.
A theorem without \newtheorem: fine here, an error in LaTeX
\begin{theorem}
Every multiple of 44 is even.
\end{theorem}HTML and Markdown export
The preview and the PDF come from the typesetter and always match. The HTML and Markdown exports use the converter alone: numbers for sections and equations are not printed, citations show their key, images are referenced by name, and pictures stay as LaTeX source. Math there goes through a different math converter, so a formula can differ from the PDF. See Export.
Package by package
Each package has its own page with what works, what does not and what to write instead: see the Package reference. For the conference look-alikes, see Conference templates.
Questions and answers
Does Scissor LaTeX run pdfLaTeX or LuaLaTeX?
No. It converts LaTeX into Typst in your browser and typesets that. No TeX program runs, and no package code is loaded.
Can I use any LaTeX package?
\usepackage accepts any name and never fails, but only packages the converter knows have an effect. The package reference lists what each one does here.
Are geometry margins applied?
Yes. The paper, the orientation and the margins from geometry in the preamble are applied. \newgeometry in the body is ignored: the whole document keeps the preamble's page.
Will a document from Scissor LaTeX compile in a TeX installation?
Usually yes, if you declare theorem environments with \newtheorem, avoid Unicode math characters or add unicode-math, and fix anything that the preview accepted but LaTeX rejects, such as a lone &.
