Appendices and the appendix package in Scissor LaTeX
\appendix works: the sections after it are lettered A, B, C, their subsections A.1, and references and \cref print the letters. The appendix package's appendices environment is not supported, since its sections keep ordinary numbers, and \appendixpage and \addappheadtotoc are skipped; a reference written before \appendix also shows a number instead of the letter.
What the package does
LaTeX's own \appendix command starts the appendix: the sections after it are lettered A, B, C instead of numbered (in a report or book, the chapters). The appendix package adds more control:
- the
appendicesenvironment, which does the same as\appendixbut only up to\end{appendices}; \appendixpage, a heading "Appendices" on its own line, and\addappheadtotoc, which adds it to the table of contents;- the options
toc,page,titleandheader; - the
subappendicesenvironment, for an appendix at the end of a single chapter or section.
What works here
| Command | In Scissor LaTeX | Notes |
|---|---|---|
\appendix in an article | Works | Sections are lettered A, B, C, and subsections A.1, A.2. |
\appendix in a report or book | Partly | Chapters are lettered A, B, C, but headed "Chapter A" instead of "Appendix A". |
\ref, \cref, \autoref after \appendix | Works | \ref prints "A", \cref prints "appendix A", and \autoref prints "Section A". |
\ref to an appendix, written before \appendix | Partly | Prints a number ("1") instead of the letter. Write the reference after the appendix starts, or write the letter out. |
| Table of contents | Partly | Appendix sections show numbers instead of letters. |
\begin{appendices} ... \end{appendices} | Not supported | Accepted without a message, but the sections inside are numbered like the ones before. Use \appendix instead. |
\appendixpage, \addappheadtotoc | Not supported | Skipped with a Problems note. Write \section*{Appendices} for a heading. |
subappendices | Not supported | Its content is kept with ordinary numbers. |
Options toc, page, title, header, titletoc | Left out | Accepted, no effect. |
\appendixname | Not supported | Skipped with a note; nothing is printed. |
Examples
\appendix letters the sections after it, and references printed after it show the letters:
\appendix with \ref and \cref
\section{Results}
John Doe reports the main result.
\appendix
\section{Raw data}\label{app:data}
\subsection{Samples}\label{app:samples}
All 44 samples are listed in \cref{app:samples}, part of
appendix~\ref{app:data}.The appendices environment of the package is accepted, but its sections are numbered on. \appendix gives the letters:
appendices keeps the numbers; \appendix letters
\section{Method}

\begin{appendices}
\section{Proofs}
Numbered 2 here, lettered A in a TeX installation.
\end{appendices}Compatibility
- From a TeX installation to here: documents that use
\appendixlook the same, apart from the table of contents and "Chapter A". Documents that use theappendicesenvironment lose the letters; add\appendixbefore the first appendix section and the environment can stay. - From here to a TeX installation: documents compile there unchanged.

Questions and answers
How do I add an appendix in LaTeX?
Write \appendix once, after the main text; every \section after it is an appendix, lettered A, B, C. No package is needed.
Why does my reference to the appendix show 1 instead of A?
A reference written before \appendix in the source is printed as a number here. References after \appendix are correct. Writing the letter out, as in "appendix A", reads the same everywhere.
