Greek letters in LaTeX

In math mode, write the letter's name after a backslash: \alpha gives α, and a capital first letter gives the capital, so \Gamma gives Γ.

Using Greek letters

Greek letters are math symbols, so they go between $ ... $ or in a display. In standard LaTeX, capitals exist only where they differ from Latin letters: there is \Gamma but no \Alpha, because a capital alpha looks like A.

Greek letters in a sentence

The angle $\theta$ and the wavelength $\lambda$ give
$\Delta\phi = 2\pi\, d \sin\theta / \lambda$.

Some letters have a second form, written with var: \varepsilon, \vartheta, \varphi, \varrho, \varsigma and \varpi.

Standard and variant forms

\epsilon \; \varepsilon \qquad \theta \; \vartheta \qquad \phi \; \varphi \qquad \rho \; \varrho
