graphicx and \includegraphics in Scissor LaTeX

The graphicx package works partly in Scissor LaTeX: \includegraphics shows PNG, JPG, SVG and PDF files from your project and reads width=; height, scale, angle, trim and clip are ignored, \rotatebox does not rotate, and \scalebox and \resizebox only resize a TikZ picture.

What the package does

graphicx gives you \includegraphics[options]{file} to place an image file, and boxes that scale, resize or rotate their content: \scalebox, \resizebox and \rotatebox.

What works here

Command or optionIn Scissor LaTeXNotes
\includegraphics{file.png}WorksPNG, JPG, JPEG, SVG and PDF files in the project. Without width= the image keeps its own size.
\includegraphics{file} (no extension)PartlyFinds .png, .jpg, .jpeg and .svg files. A PDF needs the extension written: {plot.pdf}.
width=0.5\linewidth, width=4cmWorksLengths and fractions of \linewidth or \textwidth. The height follows the aspect ratio.
height=, scale=, angle=, trim=, clip, keepaspectratioLeft outIgnored without a message.
EPS files, or a file that is not in the projectPlaceholderA dashed box with the file name, and a Problems note "Images not in the project".
Several images in a rowPartlyEach image is placed on its own line, also inside a paragraph. Images side by side only work in the cells of a tabular.
\graphicspath{...}Left outAccepted without a message.
\scalebox{2}{...}, \resizebox{w}{!}{...}PartlyOnly a single TikZ picture inside is resized; text and images keep their size.
\rotatebox{90}{...}Left outThe content is kept, not rotated.
\reflectbox{...}Not supportedSkipped with a Problems note; the content is kept.

Examples

An image at half the line width, in a figure with a caption:

\includegraphics with width=

LaTeXPreamble: \usepackage{graphicx}Open in editor (opens in a new tab)
\begin{figure}[h]
  \centering
  \includegraphics[width=0.5\linewidth]{graphicx-photo}
  \caption{Weekly orders in John Doe's shop.}
  \label{fig:orders}
\end{figure}
Figure~\ref{fig:orders} shows four weeks.

SVG and PDF files work too. Write the extension for a PDF:

An SVG and a PDF image

LaTeXPreamble: \usepackage{graphicx}Open in editor (opens in a new tab)
\includegraphics[width=4cm]{graphicx-diagram.svg}

\includegraphics[width=4cm]{graphicx-chart.pdf}

height= is ignored. This image is meant to be 1 cm high, but it keeps its own size:

height= is ignored

LaTeXPreamble: \usepackage{graphicx}Open in editor (opens in a new tab)
\includegraphics[height=1cm]{graphicx-photo.png}

Give width= instead. To make an image about 1 cm high, work out the width from its aspect ratio (this one is 16 by 9, so about 1.8 cm).

A missing file, or one in a format the typesetter cannot read, becomes a dashed placeholder and a note in the Problems tab:

A missing image shows a placeholder

LaTeXPreamble: \usepackage{graphicx}Open in editor (opens in a new tab)
\includegraphics[width=5cm]{results/plot.eps}

Problems tab: Images not in the project: results/plot.eps

\resizebox scales a TikZ picture to a given width:

\resizebox around a TikZ picture

LaTeXPreamble: \usepackage{graphicx,tikz}Open in editor (opens in a new tab)
\resizebox{3cm}{!}{%
  \begin{tikzpicture}
    \draw (0,0) rectangle (4,2);
    \draw (0,0) -- (4,2);
    \node at (2,2.4) {44};
  \end{tikzpicture}}

Compatibility

  • From a TeX installation to here: upload the image files with the same folder names. Images sized with height= or scale= appear at their own size; switch to width=. PDF figures included without an extension need .pdf added.
  • From here to a TeX installation: pdfLaTeX does not read SVG files. Convert them to PDF (or use the svg package), or keep PNG, JPG and PDF images only.

Questions and answers

Why is my image too big?

Without width= an image keeps its own size, and height= and scale= are ignored. Add width=0.8\linewidth or a fixed width such as width=6cm.

Can I include a PDF figure?

Yes. Upload the PDF to the project and write the file name with its extension, for example \includegraphics[width=\linewidth]{plot.pdf}.

Why does my image show as a dashed box?

The file is not in the project, the path is different, or it is an EPS file. The Problems tab names the file it could not find.
